Tips & Tricks to beat the airport blues
What is something that is bound to elicit groans of frustration, some eye rolls and a slew of horror stories? If you said airport travel, you would be correct! This is especially true at any mention of security lines and the TSA. It’s pretty much the worst.
It’s true that in many ways, traveling by plane lacks much of the glamor and carefree effortless elegance of, say, 60 years ago. You know, that golden age of travel that you’ll find at the TWA Hotel. We live in a different world now with much more complex problems that need to be addressed.
Going through the lines and security are an unfortunate necessity when you travel by air, so how about making it as painless as possible? Here are some easy tips and tricks to help you breeze through your next security screening.
Get organized
Seems obvious, right? Here are six ways that can shave precious minutes and hassle off your wait time.
Check your flight status before you get ready to leave your house, or download a smartphone app like TripIt or Flightview that will automatically notify you of any changes to your itinerary. I also offer my clients custom itineraries through a web app that will update you of changes as well.
Check in to your flight online. Many airlines also let you pay for your checked bags in advance, so when you arrive at the airport, all you have to do is print your bag tag at a kiosk and you are good to go.
Save your boarding passes to the wallet on your phone. This allows quick and easy access for you and everyone in your party. It’s also one last piece of paper to remember or fumble with as you go through security.
Have everything you need to check in and get through security in an easily-accessible part of your wallet or bag. Don’t waste your (and other people’s) time digging through your bag at the moment you need them. Clutter is travel’s worst enemy!
Before arriving at the airport, place your water, jewelry, loose change and any other small items in a plastic bag in your carry on bag. This will save you time having to remember and gather them while in line, and they’re all together in one place when you’re through. Same goes for liquids. Have them all in a bag to easily pull out and put in a bin. TSA agents reportedly appreciate this kind of forethought.
While in line, make a mental note of how many bins you’ll need. Take a few seconds to plan out the most efficient way to get your stuff on the belt so you can go through, get dressed, and get out.
Get on the list
The TSA has a trusted traveler program called TSA PreCheck® that is now available in most airports across the country. It has perks like not requiring shoe, laptop or liquid removal for a speedy trip through security. If you have young children, this will be a life saver for you!
We often get through security in a fraction of the time with TSA PreCheck®. For example at busy airports like Orlando which often has security lines of 45 minutes or more, all 3 of us have gotten through in under 10 minutes!
Troubleshoot like a pro
When things don’t go as planned like a flight delay or missed connection, don’t panic! There are a few simple ways to help make a messy situation much more bearable.
If you have a smartphone, make use of it. Find helpful apps (such as TripIt) that keep all your travel information organized, that keep you informed, and that have helpful names and numbers (like mine!) at your fingertips when you need them.
Program the numbers of your travel advisor, airline, car rental service, hotel, and any other contact info into your phone. You can even temporarily organize them all under one name. For example, assign the “last name” of each item as “California Trip 2022,” and they’ll all appear listed in one spot in your contacts for easy access. This way, if a logistical emergency occurs, you have the ability to reach me so I can help you find additional flights, make cancellations, reschedule pick-up/drop-off times, or notify hosts or a front desk of a late arrival.
Get Zen
I have shared before that I am an anxious traveler, so this is a very important step for me. Having everything organized helps to keep you calm and focused when you arrive at the airport. So the tips above will inherently keep you calmer. Once you arrive, all there is left to do is wait in line, so make the most of it and keep yourself centered.
Focus on the excitement you feel about your trip. Talk to your kids. Take deep breaths. Meditate. Do some seated stretches. Strike up a conversation. Listen to a podcast. Get your mind in a place that’s positive and productive to set the tone for your trip. Focus on what’s working and what you’re thankful for.
Some airlines like JetBlue even have meditations as part of their on board entertainment for you to take advantage of.
Most importantly, don’t forget to pack your patience. Everyone is in the same boat; everyone wants to get through. A smile and a “thank-you” never hurt, either. I’ve known many people, including myself, who’ve gotten unexpected happy surprises (baggage fees waived, seat upgrade, etc…) just for being polite when everyone else was falling apart. Kindness rules. See where it gets you!
Travel advisors, like myself, are here to help you navigate every aspect of your travels, including getting through airport security. Don’t hesitate to take advantage of our services to make your next trip a stress-free experience.
